From Portugal come elements fundamental to fado: the Portuguese language, sensitivity and the rich poetic traditions of Portuguese literature with themes dating back to the music of the Middle Ages.
Etymologically, the word fado, derived from the Latin fatum/fate (the meaning os which it retains) has a long history in the Portuguese language and culture.
The dramatic intensity of the melodic themes and, above all, of their interpretation has lent the performance of Fado an austere image and special atmosphere that is best reflected in the traditional announcement, “Silence! They are to sing Fado.”
